Neighbors.

I live in a building that consumes an entire city block.  I have 999 neighbors.  Really.  Yet, the only one I know is the woman at the end of my hall who is quite friendly despite her terribly annoying, incessantly barking dog.  We've spoken twice.  The rest of the people on my floor are known by appointed aliases; Willy Wonka ("no one ever goes in, no one ever comes out."), The Biggest Loser (all of his meals are delivered daily by one of those weight loss companies... we're totally (secretly) rooting for him!) and The Filthy Dirties (they receive daily dry cleaning deliveries).

I suppose it would be nice to be friendly with the people in my building.  Clearly not nice enough for me to strike up a conversation with a stranger in the elevator and invite them for dinner, but still nice, I guess.  Maybe I will start chatting up my neighbors and see where it gets me.  I will keep you posted.

Are there still places in this world where people know their neighbors?

we do. pretty much, anyway. then again, we only have 12 units in our building. and it's actually two buildings set up in two u-shapes with common courtyards. they were built in the 40s to house the actors for the studios. (we live right next to warner bros.)
but sometimes i miss the anonymity, you know?

YES! But then again, there's only 5 houses on my road. But we do know the people who live RIGHT next door the best :)

Too funny! I'm totally loving your aliases. But yes, we do know our neighbors... well... some of them. But then again, you're talking about the south where the cashier checking you out at the grocery wants to provide commentary on everything you are buying. I know you feel rude - but believe me, I'd prefer the anonymity. In fact, I'm very excited about it!

I only have 12 people who live around me and I seriously only know 1 of them - a super nice old woman who lives below me. It's not that I don't want to know my neighbors, I just never see them! And if I do, all we say is "hi" -- there's not much conversation going on. Not sure how to change that....

Haha, keep me posted on how it goes. I know no one in my huge building! ... except for one of the contestants from Top Chef who lives on the 8th floor ... too cool, right?!
